HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team opened the 2023 campaign with a pair of evens wins at the Robert Platt Invitational at the University of Houston.
Nick Hicks opened the season with a win in the weight throw while Elian Ahmar won shot put for the second-straight week, one of the few Rice athletes who competed last week. Alex Slinkman's clearance of 18-01 placed him third all-time for indoor at Rice, behind Chris Pillow (18-4.5) and two-time national champ Jason Colwick (18-7.25).
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"We brought about half of our team to really kick off the season and in a day that saw two victories in the throws, it was topped by Alexander Slinkman clearing 18'01" in the pole vault. Nick Hicks won the weight throw with a great season opener and Elian Ahmar improved his personal indoor best from last week, winning the shot again. Most other highlights were in the field events. Ese Amata opened with a second-place finish in the high jump and Jorge Hinojosa took third in the shot put. But Slinkman's efforts deserves special attention. The mark is, according to the announcer, No. 10 in the world, No. 9 in the NCAA and ranks third all-time for indoor at Rice. It was a very nice way to start the season."
