Opening the Last One
Rice is 6-11 in Conference USA openers, including a 24-19 win over Southern Miss at Rice Stadium last season. The Owls are 3-6 when opening the conference slate at home and 3-5 when hitting the road to start conference play. This will be the fourth consecutive year Rice has opened the C-USA slate at home, losing in overtime to LA Tech in 2019 and in double overtime to Middle Tennessee in 2020. It will be the third time the Owls have opened conference action against UAB (0-2), but the first time at Rice Stadium. In addition to its first game in C-USA mentioned above, Rice also traveled to Birmingham in 2009 to open conference action and lost 44-24. Rice's most common opponent in C-USA openers was Southern Miss (won 31-20 in 2007, lost 48-24 in 2011, and 40-28 in 2018 in Hattiesburg; won 24-19 last year at Rice Stadium). The Owls faced SMU twice to open conference play and met FAU, Houston, LA Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, ODU, UTEP and WKU once. FIU and UTSA are the only current C-USA team to have not opened a conference season for Rice, in addition to former members Central Florida, East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa.
A Memorable First
Rice will open its last Conference USA season 17 years to the day the Owls played their first game in the conference against the same opponent. UAB hosted Rice at Legion Field on October 1, 2005, and defeated the Owls 45-26. Rice's final touchdown in that game was a 13-yard touchdown pass from Chase Clement to Jarett Dillard, the first of an eventual NCAA record 51 touchdown passes by the duo.
Working the Numbers
• Rice has topped 400 yards in total offense in three consecutive games for the first time since 2016. The last time the Owls reached that mark in four consecutive games was in 2012.
• TJ McMahon is the first Rice QB to throw for more than 300 yards in consecutive games since Driphus Jackson threw for 337 in the 2014 regular-season finale at LA Tech and 318 in the Hawai'i Bowl win over Fresno State. The last Owl to throw for over 300 in consecutive weeks was Chase Clement who topped 300 yards passing in last four games of the 2008 season before adding a fifth in the Texas Bowl win over Western Michigan.
• McMahon has thrown for 911yards in the last three games (70-104), the most by a Rice QB since Chase Clement threw for 1,003 in the final three games of the 2008 season. Clement threw for 1,645 yards in the final four games of 2007.
• Ari Broussard has scored a rushing touchdown in each game this year and has a career-best six this season… He is the 1st Owl to score on the ground in four consecutive games since Sam McGuffie and Jeremy Eddington both did it in the last four games of 2010... Eddington scored in five straight games, but missed one game in his streak.
