Metcalf earns individual crown
HOUSTON – The Rice Owl's men's cross country won their second meet of the season Saturday morning, winning the McNeese Cowboy Stampede team title Saturday morning by placing their top five runners inside the Top-10.
As a team the Owls recorded 29 points to win the five-team meet, including host and second-place finisher McNeese (48 points).
Sophomore Elliot Metcalf took home the individual title for the Owls with a finish of 19:30.86 in the four-mile race, winning by nearly 10 full seconds just a couple weeks removed from placing third at the season-opening Rice Invitational. Junior Travis Dowd placed fourth overall (19:43.80) while senior Daniel Cohen (7th-20:11.22), sophomore Wesley Wright (8th-20:12.98), and sophomore Davis Thames (9th-20:14.33) rounded out the top finishers for the Owls.
"On a very, very hot and humid day our guys ran smart and solid," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "Elliot (Metcalf) especially ran a good race, stayed patient and was able to break away from some excellent runners late in the race. Travis (Dowd) gallantly tried to outkick the competition in an attempt to go 1-2, but in the end finished well. The rest of the team formed a pack early and held it to the end. That allowed us to beat a very good McNeese team at their home meet. It was a very good day for this early in the season."
