Owls place third as a team
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice junior All-American Grace Forbes backed up her Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week award earlier in the week with her second-straight individual victory of the cross country season on Friday, winning the Texas A&M Invitational individual title with a time of 17:11.6 in the 5k race.
Forbes, who notched her eighth individual victory of her cross country career, ran at a 5:31 pace and finished nearly a full 10 seconds faster than second place finisher Gracie Morris of TCU. Forbes posted a 2k split of 6:36.
Also finishing in the Top-10 for the Owls was junior Taigen Hunter-Galvan, who placed ninth with a time of 18:24. Senior Alyssa Balandran (11th-18:34), senior transfer Lina Spjut (15th-18:46) and sophomore Katlyn Schmeltzer (24th-19:07) rounded out the Owls five scorers.
As a team the Owls finished third overall with 56 points, while host Texas A&M (29 points) and TCU (46 points) placed second and third, respectively.
"Overall we had many improvements from last week and many improvements from this meet last year," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "Taigen, Alyssa, Katlyn, Ellie and Ava are all much better and have improved over the past year tremendously. Grace ran another tremendous race and we need to make sure to appreciate how she has become a leader, both physically and emotionally. We have most all of the season ahead of us and we're really looking forward to what's ahead of us."
The Owls will wait two weeks for their next weekend of competition, which will be split participation at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. on Sept. 30 and the UIW Invitational on Oct. 1 in San Antonio, Texas.
