HOME OPENERS
Rice opens its 73rd season at Rice Stadium against McNeese on Saturday. Rice is 39-32-1 in home openers since Rice Stadium opened in 1950 and 68-41-1 overall in home openers in Houston. The Owls have lost their last three home openers since defeating Prairie View in Mike Bloomgren's debut in 2018.
NASA SPACE DAY
as part of a three-day commemoration of the 60th anniversary of President John Kennedy's speech at Rice Stadium, the Rice football team will wear a special uniform concept created in partnership with NASA and adidas. The uniform features the Artemis font package that recognizes the future of NASA's mission to develop the moon as a gateway to further explore space, making our way to Mars.
The uniform's unique features include:
• Key excerpts of the JFK speech on the shoulder.
• HOU.TX nameplate in recognition of Houston, Texas — The home of Space City.
• Geo coordinates of Rice Stadium on the collar.
• A custom Rice Space logo that signifies the flight path from earth to space while each of the six stars remembers the Apollo missions that landed on the moon — In addition to the seventh star signifying the future missions ahead to Mars.
• The colors based on navy and gold represent the Rice Owls brand and the framis (reflective) gold represents the gold foil used on a lunar landing spacecraft.
• Overall the white base uniform and American flag patch symbolize an astronaut's space uniform.
HUDDLING UP WITH THE 2012 TEAM
In addition to joining with Rice University and NASA to commemorate the 60th anniversary of President John Kennedy's historic speech at Rice Stadium, Rice will also recognize the members of the Owls' 2012 Armed Forces Bowl team as part of the annual R Association Huddle Up. The 2012 Owls won five of their last six to reach bowl eligibility and then defeated Air Force 34-14, setting the stage for a run to the 2013 Conference USA Championship and a streak of three consecutive bowl berths. Members of the team will be the featured guests at a reception on Friday and then recognized on the field during the game on Saturday.
