Third addition to 22-23 team
Rice head women's tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced on Thursday the signing of Darya Schwartzman of Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut, Israel to a letter of intent to join the Owls for the start of the 2022-23 season.
Schwartzman, 21, has a career-best ITF ranking of 178 and has only recently returned to full-time tennis competition after completing her two years of service with the Israel Defense Force.
"We are excited to add Darya to our team," Schmidt said. "Her positive attitude, work ethic, and determination fit well with the culture of our team. Darya brings both a great deal of tennis & life experience with her and I am confident she will make an immediate impact on our team as well as the greater Rice community."
Schwartzman is the third addition to the Owls squad for the upcoming season. Fellow freshman Marte Lambrecht will also join the Owls for the fall semester while transfer Sydney Berlin will join the team in January for the dual season after completing her studies at the University of Florida.
The Owls will open their 2022 fall season by competing in the ITA Texas Regional in Fort Worth, September 22-26. Their lone home action of the fall will be on November 3-5 when they host Houston and BYU for the Rice Fall Invitational.
