Budin Named C-USA Scholar Athlete for Women's Tennis

One of seven Owls honored
Maria Budin was one of a league-leading seven Rice student-athletes who were recognized for being named their respective sport's Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Monday.
Budin earned Academic All-Conference USA Honors in 2022, posting a 3.91 GPA while majoring in Psychology, as well as all-conference honors in doubles. She posted a 14-4 in record in singles to finish second on the team and combined with Diae El Jardi to reach as high as 16th in the nation during the season in doubles and qualify for the NCAA Championship. The duo was 14-5 in dual competition at the first doubles line, the most wins for Rice at the first line since Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath were 20-6 in 2013. They shared Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors on March 2 after handing Texas A&M's then #2 Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Markarova their first loss of the year.
Voted on by C-USA's 14 FARs (Faculty Athletics Representatives), the awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement, and service.
