DALLAS – Rice University sophomore track and field distance runner and cross country sensation Grace Forbes earned the prestigious honor of being named the 2021-22 Michael L. Slive Conference USA Female Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday.
A combined five-time USTFCCCA All-American between her track and cross country careers, Forbes joins former Owl Erica Ogwumike (women's basketball; 2019 and 2020) as the only Rice student-athletes to win the all-encompassing award that spans eight female sports.
Forbes swept the C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year and C-USA Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year awards in 2021-22, earning both awards for a second straight year.
Earlier this month, Forbes finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 32:48.07 in the 10,000m to earn her first career medal stand appearance. Prior to that performance, Forbes won her second consecutive NCAA West 10,000m crown, that coming on the heels of sweeping the 5000m and 10,000m titles at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
During the cross country season, Forbes was the Owls' No. 1 runner and won her second straight USTFCCCA South Central Region Athlete of the Year award after helping lead the Owls to the NCAA Championships as a team for the seventh time in program history. Forbes won five total race during the cross country season and became just the second Owl to win the individual title at the NCAA South Central regional.
Forbes repeated as the C-USA individual champion and later placed 45th overall at the NCAA Championships.
The Wallingford, Pa. native missed the entire indoor season after being diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disorder.
