Owls close with four-game winning streak
Miami: Austin Bulman gave Rice and early lead and Parker Smith, Brandon Deskins and Matthew Linskey made it stand up as Rice completed a three-game sweep of FIU with a 3-1 win on Saturday.
The Details: Unlike the first two games of the series where FIU pitchers struck out the side each night, the Owls gave Parker Smith, but not before striking out twice to open the game. Nathan Becker battled for a two-out walk to break the streak and Austin Bulman wasted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left for his 10th home run of the season. Smith worked into the sixth for the second straight outing, allowing just an unearned run while Deskins and Linskey shut down the Panthers over the final 3.2 to give the Owls their fourth consecutive win and their first sweep of a C-USA road series since they won all three at ODU on March 29 & 30, 2019.
Notable
• The win was the Owls' fourth in a row, their longest streak of the season.
• Rice has won 13 of 15 games with FIU in Miami and has swept the Panthers at home three times.
• Bulman's first-inning homer was his 10th of the season and extended the Owls' home run streak to the final six games of the season, matching a similar streak by Rice to end last season.
• Parker Smith made the start for the Owls and worked five shutout innings… In his last two starts of the season (Houston on Tuesday and FIU today) Smith worked a combined 10.2 innings, allowed seven hits, four runs (one earned), walked one while not striking out a batter.
• The Owls ended each of Smith's first three innings with double plays and finished with three on the day to give them 47 on the season which leads Conference USA.
• Brandon Deskins worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. In three appearances in the four games of the season's final road trip, Deskins worked 6.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out 12.
• Working in his first save opportunity since the end of March, Linskey fanned three and gave up one hit to record his fifth save (in five chances) and his third in C-USA action.
