Riedel's two doubles spark Rice attack
Miami: Jack Riedel smacked a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and drove in a third to lead Rice to an 8-2 win over FIU in the opener of the Owls' final series of the season on Thursday night.
The Details: Riedel had a quick answer after FIU struck for a solo run in the bottom of the first. With one out in the second, he doubled to right and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He came home to tie the game, beating the throw home after Pierce Gallo flew out to right on a 1-2 pitch. Owls' starter David Shaw, who gave up back-to-back singles to the first two batters he faced to produce FIU's only lead, recovered to retire the next three hitters. He faced the minimum in the second and then worked around a hit and two walks in the third, thanks in part to a caught stealing by catcher Manny Garza to send the game to the fourth tied at 1-1. Riedel rewarded Shaw's efforts by doubling home Austin Bulman to open a four-run fourth inning to put Rice ahead to stay. Riedel came home on an RBI double by Aaron Smigelski to increase the lead to 3-1 and the Owls added two more runs as Manny Garza scored on a wild pitch and Smigelski came home on a passed ball. Alex DeLeon took over on the mound and made quick work of Panther hitters, retiring all six he faced. Brandon Deskins followed DeLeon and added three shutout innings of his own, fanning six to earn credit for his third win of the year. After FIU pitchers kept things close by facing the minimum number of hitters over the next four innings, Connor Walsh ended any Panther hopes for a late rally by blasting a three-run homer in the top of the ninth.

Notable
- The win was the Owls' third in a series opener this year and snapped a 10-game Conference USA road losing streak. Rice had not picked up a conference road win since taking the first two road games of the season at Marshall (3/25 &26).
- The 8-2 win was the largest margin of victory on the road for the Owls this season and their largest since a 7-0 win at UAB on 5/8/21.
- Rice has won 11 of 13 games between the schools played in Miami.
- Four of the Owls' eight hits went for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 home run) and the three doubles give the Owls 99 this season.
- Deskins' third win matched his career-high set last season and his six strikeouts were one shy of his season-high of seven vs. SFA… He has appeared in both games of the Owls' four-game road trip to end the season and he has pitched 4.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits and walking one while striking out nine.
- Riedel's two doubles were a career-high.
- Walsh started his ninth consecutive game in center and is hitting .379 and slugging .837 over that stretch (14x37, 3 2Bs, 1 3B, 4 HR)… His four home runs match his career-high set last season.
- Walsh has homered in consecutive games for the first time since March 17 & 19, 2021 (Texas State and Southern).
- Garza's has hit in nine of his last 12 starts (13x42) with seven multi-hit games.
