Doubleheader set for Saturday
In Brief: Three Harvard pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts while holding Rice to five hits as the Crimson blanked the Owls 3-0 in the opener of a four-game series at Reckling Park on Friday night.
The Details: After Harvard scored single runs in the second and third innings, Rice mounted serious threats in the third and fourth innings. With one out in the third, Justin Long singled up the middle for the Owls first hit off of Crimson starter Adam Stone and then advanced to second a balk. Pierce Gallo and Connor Walsh walked. After a strikeout, Stone retired Guy Garibay Jr. on a line out to right to end the frame. Rice came back in the fourth to put Stone in another jam, loading the bases on an infield single buy Nathan Becker, a double by Benjamin Rosengard, and a Long being hit by a pitch. But Stone again escaped on a ground out and went on to strike out eight in five innings to pick up his first career win.
Notable:
- Cooper Chandler worked five innings in his third start of the year, allowing six hits and a pair of runs while striking out a season-high six. The six strikeouts were his most since fanning six for Pepperdine in 2020. He has fanned a team-leading 16 this season in 10.2 innings of work.
- Nathan Becker collected a pair of his for his second multi-hit game of the year. He has hits in three of his four starts at DH (5x15).
- Connor Walsh extended his hitting streak to four games. He has at least one hit in each of his four starts (5x13).
- David Shaw worked a scoreless seventh inning, his second consecutive clean appearance.
- Benjamin Rosengard's double in fourth was his first hit as an Owl.
