Abikhaled Wins Steeplechase at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON - Andrew Abikhaled and Shaun Kerry each recorded individual victories to highlight the Rice Owls men's track and field performance Friday on day two of the Victor Lopez Classic.
On a day with just four collegiate events, Abikhaled helped the Owls make the most of it by setting a personal best time of 8:51.71 in the 3000m steeplechase to take gold, claiming the fifth-fastest time in the event in program history while also moving into fifth in this year's NCAA standings two weeks into the season.
Kerry repeated as the hammer throw champion with a winning mark of 59.95m, his third individual victory of his career.
The Owls also had six athletes competing, highlighted by a seventh place finish in the decathlon from Grant Levesque. The freshman racked up 7219 points, which ranks sixth in program history.
