Baylor Blanks Owls

Next Up: Four-game series with Harvard
In Brief: The Baylor Bears returned to Reckling Park for the first time in 11 years and held Rice to two hits in a 9-0 win on Wednesday night. Baylor improved to 4-4 on the season while Rice dropped to 2-6.
The Details: Freshman Parker Smith made his second start of the season for Rice and held the Bears to just one run over his first four innings, but three errors lead to five runs in the fifth and his exit with two outs to break the close game open. Rice loaded the bases in the second thanks to three of the seven walks issued by Baylor pitchers, but Baylor's Kobe Andrade came in to end the early threat and went on to earn credit for the win. The Owls were limited to a pair of leadoff singles in the first two innings in addition to their seven walks.
Notable:
- Smith was charged with only one earned run and has posted a 1.42 ERA in his three appearances (two starts) this year.
- Aaron Smigelski extended his career-opening hitting streak to seven games with his leadoff single in the second innings.
- Graiden West made his collegiate debut as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and remained in the game at third base.
- Trey Clucas made his debut by starting the eighth inning.
- Rice failed to homer at home for the first time this year, also ending a streak of eight consecutive home games with a long ball dating back to 2021.
