Fast Start Leads Owls Past No. 41 Charlotte

Face North Texas at noon on Sunday
In Brief: Anastasia Smirnova shook off a loss in the second set and provided the clinching point for Rice over 41st ranked Charlotte in Denton on Saturday. The Owls who are currently ranked 71st in the ITA computer poll, improved to 8-3 on the season while Charlotte fell to 10-3.
Doubles: The opening point of the match featured a showdown at the first line between doubles teams ranked 30th (Rice's Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi) and 31st (Charlotte's Margaux Maquet and Lucia Quiterio) and the matchup lived up the billing. After Victoria Smirnova and Federica Trevisan gave Rice the early advantage with a 6-4 win at the third line, Budin and El Jardi edged the 49er duo in a tiebreaker to give the Owls the early lead.
Singles: Rice grabbed four of six first sets in singles to increase the pressure on the 49ers. Anna Bowtell swiftly added the second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth line. Victoria Smirnova followed with a straight-set win at the first line over Marquet, who came in ranked 120th, setting the stage for her twin sister to deliver the clinching point.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "All around tough fight from our team. Everyone stayed focused, kept discipline no matter the score, and played solid tennis across the board. Looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow against UNT."
