Lamar Takes Series Opener

Middle game set for 2 p.m. Saturday
The Details: Intermittent rain and gametime temperatures but a damper on the normal excitement of the first home game of the season and the Owls found themselves in an early 4-0 deficit before Bulman and Garibay packaged back to back doubles to plate Rice's first run. One out later, Drew Woodcox lashed double of his own to score Garibay and cut the Cardinals lead in half. Lamar got those two runs back with a pair in the third and added a single tally in the sixth before Rice answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the same inning. Lamar added four in the eighth and one in the ninth before Garibay drilled a three-run homer in the ninth to close the scoring.
Notable:
- Friday's postgame fireworks fell victim to the weather and have been re-scheduled for next Friday's opener with Harvard.
- The win by Lamar snapped a four-game winning streak in the series by Rice as well as a six-game winning streak at Reckling Park between the two schools.
- Rice collected six doubles in a game for the first time since the Owls had six at Texas Tech on 3/7/20.
- Garibay's four RBI were a career-high as were his two doubles, while he and Bulman matched their career-highs with three hits each. It's the third time for Garibay and the sixth for Bulman.
- Garibay has reached base in all five games this season and leads the team with four doubles in the first five games.
Up Next: The Owls and Cardinal will meet in the middle game of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
