Owls Make Final Road Appearance at Southern Miss
Rice plays their final road contest of the season on Saturday when they travel to Hattiesburg for a rematch against the Southern Miss Lady Eagles. The Owls dropped a 78-55 decision to Southern Miss back on Jan. 29 at Tudor Fieldhouse. Saturday's game will mark the end of a seven day road trip for the Owls in which they defeated UAB (60-55) and lost to Louisiana Tech (90-80).
Scouting Southern Miss
The Lady Eagles will be playing their first game in a week after their scheduled home contest against North Texas set for Feb. 24 was ruled a no contest. Southern Miss is currently tied with North Texas for the West Division lead and are 10-3 at Reed Green Coliseum this season. Southern Miss leads all C-USA teams in field goal percentage (43.5) and are second in scoring (68.4 ppg).
Last Time Out
The Owls battled for 50 minutes but ultimately came up just short in a 90-80 double overtime loss at Louisiana Tech Thursday evening at the Thomas Assembly Center. Rice saw their season-long three-game winning streak come to an end in a game that saw a total of 17 lead changes and nine ties. Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin led the way for the Owls with a 27-point effort, her second such performance against the Lady Techsters this season. The overtime contest was Rice's second of the season, having dropped a quadruple overtime game at Charlotte on Jan. 22.
Balanced Attack
During league play, four of the Owls five starters are currently averaging double-figures in points, providing a balanced attack. Ashlee Austin (15.4 ppg), Malia Fisher (10.9 ppg), Destiny Jackson (10.6 ppg), and Maya Bokunewicz (10.6 ppg) are all averaging double-digit points.
Austin Providing the Punch
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin had another stellar performance on Thursday, pouring in a game-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, including a career-high four made three-pointers. It marked the sixth time this season Austin has eclipsed the 20-point mark. Austin, who ranks fifth in C-USA in scoring (16.4 ppg) and field goal percentage (49.6%), has now scored in double-figures in seven straight games and nine of her last 10.
Jackson Making Her Impact Felt
In her first full season as the Owls starting point guard, Destiny Jackson has rounded into one of C-USA's most complete players and leads the league in assists per game (4.8).On Thursday, Jackson registered her first career double-double, establishing career-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (10) while also distributing six assists. Jackson has scored in double-figures in four straight games and now has 5+ assists in eight C-USA contests.
Approaching Frisco
The Owls are less than two weeks away (Mar. 8-12) from the C-USA Championship tournament, which will once again take place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. All 14 teams will participate in the single-elimination Conference Championship. Teams will be seeded 1-7 in their respective divisions and compete in a cross-divisional bracket based on regular season standings. The winner will gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
