Owls' Road Swing Moves to Ruston
Rice is riding a season-high three-game winning streak and will be looking to complete a season-series sweep of the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters Thursday evening in Ruston. The Owls defeated LA Tech back on Jan. 27 by a score of 72-64, which turned out to be Rice's first C-USA victory of the season. Since that contest the Owls have gone 4-3 as they look to pull even at .500 for the season on Thursday.
Scouting LA Tech
Louisiana Tech has now won seven of their last 10 games after splitting a Texas road pair with a win in El Paso (77-60) over UTEP before falling at UTSA (59-49). The Techsters are one game behind Southern Miss and North Texas in the conference USA West Division standings with four games left play. The Lady Techsters continue to be one of the top defensive teams in conference USA ranking No. 3 in scoring defense (58.7 ppg) and No. 4 in turnovers forced (18.9 tfpg).
Last Time Out
The Owls secured their third win in the last five days (third straight overall) with a 60-55 road victory Monday evening at UAB, kick-starting a seven-day road trip on the right note. Rice used a stifling defense in the final quarter along with a balanced scoring attack to sweep the season-series from the Blazers (13-12, 6-8). The Owls held UAB to just 10 fourth quarter points and 34 percent shooting for the game to notch their second C-USA road victory of the season. Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin led the Owls with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, contributing 12 of those points in the all-important second half.
Climbing Up the Standings
After starting C-USA play 0-5 the Owls have compiled a 5-3 record in league play and will be looking to extend their season-long winning streak to four straight on Thursday. The Owls are in sixth place in the C-USA West division but just 1.5 games back of third place LA Tech.
Fisher's Freshman Frenzy
Freshman forward Malia Fisher earned her third C-USA Freshman of the Week honor after averaging a double-double last week. Fisher snagged 18 rebounds in Rice's victory over FIU last Saturday, the most by a C-USA player this season in a league contest. Fisher also added 17 points to complete her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.
