Hitting the Road on a High Note
After consecutive C-USA victories at home, the Rice Owls go on the road for three games this week as they continue their stretch of five games in 10 days, starting Monday at UAB. It will mark a rematch of the Owls and Blazers, who played just four days prior in Houston when Rice won 81-76.
Last Time Out
The Owls put the finishing touches on a weekend home sweep by defeating the FIU Panthers 73-67 Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice won consecutive Conference USA contests for the first time this season thanks in large part to a sensational performance as a team at the free throw line, making a season-high 31 free throws on 36 attempts (86%), tied for the fifth-most made free throws by a Rice team in program history. The Owls had three players reach double-figures in points, headlined by freshman Malia Fisher.
Austin Providing the Punch
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin leads the Owls in scoring at 15.8 points per game and has scored in double-figures in 15 of 20 contests. Austin is 5th in C-USA in field goal percentage at 49.5.
Fisher's Freshman Frenzy
Freshman forward Malia Fisher snagged 18 rebounds in Rice's Saturday victory over FIU, the most by a C-USA player this season in a league contest. Fisher also added 17 points to complete her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.
Bokunewicz Finding Her Groove
After tearing her ACL in training camp last year and losing the entire season, redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz has bounced back and currently ranks second C-USA in three-point percentage (.333) and third in three-pointers made per game (2.42) during league play. In addition, Bokunewicz leads all of C-USA in minutes played per game (38.5) in conference action and has played 40+ minutes five times.
DJ Stuffing the Stat Sheet
In her first full season as the Owls starting point guard, Destiny Jackson has made an immediate impact and now currently leads C-USA in assists per game (4.6) during league play. Jackson scored a career-high 17 points against UAB last Thursday and also dished out a career-high nine assists.
Approaching Frisco
The Owls are less than three weeks away (Mar. 8-12) from the C-USA Championship tournament, which will once again take place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. All 14 teams will participate in the single-elimination Conference Championship. Teams will be seeded 1-7 in their respective divisions and compete in a cross-divisional bracket based on regular season standings. The winner will gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
