Owls finish fifth as a team with 78 points
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman multi-athlete Grant Levesque put the finishing touches on capturing his first Conference USA title with a pair of victories on Sunday to win the heptathlon with 5626 points. Sitting in second place entering the day, the El Paso, Texas native won both the 60m hurdles (8.19) and the pole vault (5.09m) to earn the top spot on the podium. Levesque's clearance of 5.09m in the vault set a heptathlon meet record. Levesque's total of 5626 points currently ranks 14th in the NCAA.
Joining Levesque on the podium was freshman Augustus Henry, who racked up 5184 points to earn bronze. Also earning points in the same event were Corbett Fong (4th-4974 pts) and Keegan O'Connor (6th-4659 pts).
The Owls got another big performance in the throws with Elian Ahmar capturing all-conference honors with a third place result in the shot put, registering a throw of 17.48m. Senior Alex Topini picked up an additional point later in the day with an eighth place (4:12.08) result in the mile.
Postmeet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"We had three truly standout performers. Grant Levesque won the heptathlon with a mark that, as of right now, is 14th in the NCAA. He also finished second in the Pole Vault to another of our CUSA champs. Natan Rivera took gold, again, in the pole vault. Nick Hicks put up a dominating performance in the weight throw. He would have won the event with every one of his legal throws. Additionally we had top three performances from the Distance Medley Relay (Davis Thames, Evan Marshman, Jason Bugg, Alex Topini), Ese Amata in the High Jump and Gus Henry in the Heptathlon. I would like to give special attention to the heptathlon as this was an event where the Owls went 1st (Grant), 3rd (Gus), 4th (Corbett Fong) and 6th (Keegan O'Connor). That is a great showing."
