Owls Welcome Wildcats For First-Ever Meeting
Rice closes out a two-game homestand to open the 2022-23 season by hosting Abilene Christian at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Picking Up Where We Left Off
After starting the conference season 0-5 against the heavyweights of the East Division (combined record of 62-28) and playing with a short bench, the Owls were one of the hottest teams in the conference down the stretch, winning six of the last seven to close the regular season, then advancing to the second round of the C-USA tournament and took top-seeded Charlotte to the wire before seeing their run end with a 59-53 loss.
Rice vs. ACU
This will be the first meeting between the schools in women's basketball.
Rice in Season Openers
The Owls' 89-77 win over SFA on Thursday improved their record in season-openers to 35-10 all-time dating back to 1978-79 and they have won 10 of their last 13 opening tilts. Rice is also 12-1 in their last 13 home openers, including seven straight wins.
Defending Home Court
The Owls have won 29 of their last 36 games at Tudor Fieldhouse, and have gone a combined a 31-8 at home over the last three years. Rice is 70-14 at home since the 2016-17 season.
Austin Tabbed for Preseason Honors, Owls Picked Fourth
Senior forward Ashlee Austin was named to the Conference USA Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team while league coaches picked the Owls to finish fourth in the conference race. Austin earned second-team, all-conference honors as a junior after a season in which she was the only player in C-USA to rank in the top 13 in points per game, field goal percentage, free throws made, and free throw percentage. She ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (46.3) and fifth in scoring with 16.5 points per game as well as free throws made (122). She established career bests in nearly every statistical category and scored in double figures in 22 of 27 games, highlighted by a pair of 30-point efforts (Sam Houston & Charlotte).
