RIce predicted to finish fourth by conference coaches
HOUSTON-- Senior forward Ashlee Austin has been named to the Conference USA Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team, which was announced in conjunction with the release of the annual preseason poll by the conference office on Thursday.
Austin earned second-team, all-conference honors as a junior after a season in which she was the only player in C-USA to rank in the top 13 in points per game, field goal percentage, free throws made, and free throw percentage. She ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (46.3) and fifth in scoring with 16.5 points per game as well as free throws made (122).
She established career bests in nearly every statistical category and scored in double figures in 22 of 27 games, highlighted by a pair of 30-point efforts (Sam Houston & Charlotte). Austin recorded her first career double-double with an 18-point, 10-rebound effort vs. Southern Miss in a 51-46 road win over the division-leading Golden Eagles which sparked a three-game winning streak for the Owls to end the regular season.
Austin averaged 18.7 points over the final nine games of the season in which the Owls were 7-2 to end Lindsay Edmonds' first year at the helm with a 14-13 record.
Rice was picked to finish fourth behind Middle Tennessee, LA Tech, and Charlotte in the voting by league coaches.
Austin and the Owls will play an exhibition game against Texas College at 2 p.m. on November 5 before hosting Stephen F. Austin to open the 2022-23 season on November 10 at 7 p.m.
The Owls' 15-game 2022-23 home schedule features five non-conference opponents in addition to 10 conference home games as Conference USA moves to a 20-game schedule featuring home and road games with each member of the league.
