10/2/2022 9:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Kate Colvin's goal in the 78th minutes snapped a scoreless tie and Rice fell to Texas A&M, 1-0, Sunday night at Ellis Field.
The Details
Rice had a chance for an early goal as both Grace Collins and Delaney Schultz got in deep into Texas A&M territory, but neither could get a shot off. Four minutes later, following a Rice foul, Bella Killgore made the save off of Mia Pante's free kick. Rice got its first shot in the 21st minute when Schultz tipped a pass to Collins who sent a shot on net. But Texas A&M goalkeeper Kenna Caldwell made the save. Ten minutes later, Schultz had a chance to give Rice the lead when she stepped in front of Caldwell's pass to the defender, but her attempt sailed high. Just a minute later, Jai Smith got behind Shelby Desroches and came in on Killgore, but Killgore made the sliding save to keep A&M off the board. Rice had one more chance just before halftime as Shiloh Miller's cross headed toward the front of the net. But, Caldwell came out and grabbed it before it could reach Madison Kent and the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Rice wasted no time putting pressure on in the second half as just a minute in, Catarina Albuquerque found Collins, who split the defense down the right side before sending her shot high. A&M came close in the 55th minute, but Pante's shot from just outside the box hit the left post. Collins created another soring chance in the 62nd when she dribbled down the right side before finding Jules Johnston at the top of the box. But Johnston's shot went over the net. Killgore came up with a sliding save in the 74th minute off a corner kick. But, just four minutes later, Kate Colvin's free kick missed everyone, but took a high bounced over a leaping Killgore into the net, snapping the standstill. Killgore almost tied it a minute later, but her free kick rang off the crossbar and the Owls couldn't get another shot off.
What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"I thought we stuck to the game plan and defended very well. We had good communication. It was a good training environment as we get ready for the stretch run of conference play, especially being able to defend that well against a good team."
