HOUSTON — Delaney Schultz scored a pair of goals and Bella Killgore made 11 saves as Rice shut out North Texas, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field.
The Details
Both teams started the match pushing the offense. In the first 15 minutes, they each got off three good chances, but couldn't crack the scoreboard. In the 21st minute, Schultz hit Grace Collins for an attempt just inside the box, but went high. Three minutes later, Killgore made a leaping save on Madi Starrett, knocking the ball off the crossbar but keeping it out of the net. But in the 26th minute, Kallie McKinney dribbled up the middle of the field and hit a streaking Madison Kent down the right side. Kent then sent a cross toward the front of the net where Schultz headed it into the left corner to give Rice the 1-0 lead. The teams then traded scoring opportunities, the match went into halftime with Rice holding the advantage.
The second half began and Rice came close to adding to its lead as three minutes in, Collins rang a shot off the crossbar. Killgore then made a big stop on Devyn Flannery before almost adding a goal herself, sending a free kick toward the left corner of the net. But UNT netminder Dani Jacobson made a diving save to keep it a one goal match. However, she wasn't able to keep Rice off the scoreboard very long as Schultz dribble to the front of the box and fired a shot into the top center of the net, doubling Rice's lead to 2-0 in the 72nd minute. The Mean Green got three shots off in the final 15 minutes, but only one reached Killgore as Rice kept them off the scoresheet.
What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"I thought we got a full effort from everybody. It was 28 players all pushing in the same direction, trying to get three points that we really think is six when you're playing a team with the history of North Texas. They are certainly another challenger to win the league title. So, it was a big day. Bella (Killgore) was outstanding. She made four or five really big saves that was the difference in the game, and Delaney (Schultz) came through again with two really good goals."
