HOUSTON — Grace Collins scored a pair of goals and a lightning delay was not enough to slow down the Owls as Rice recorded its second straight shutout, 2-0, Thursday night at Holloway Field.
The Details
Rice came flying out of the gate. Just a minute in, Delaney Schultz dribbled down the right side before sending a pass to Collins, who had an open net. But a UTEP defender got to the ball just before Collins, knocking it away. Schultz and Collins connected again in the fifth minute. This time, they made the Miners pay as Collins took the pass and put it into the bottom right corner to give Rice the lead. Collins had a chance for her second goal in the 15th minute when she tried to slip it past the closing UTEP goalkeeper. But she was able to corral the ball before Collins could get it past her. The Owls kept the pressure on as Schultz had a scoring chance of her own, but her attempt went past the right post. But, with nine minutes remaining in the half, the game was stopped due to lightning in the area. After a 40-minute delay, the game picked back up with the teams playing the final nine minutes of the half before heading into the break with Rice holding a 1-0 lead.
Just like the first half, Rice wasted no time in the second. In the 51st minute, Kallie McKinney hit Collins down the right side, who weaved her way through the defense and beat the keeper for her second goal of the game. Collins had a two good chances at her first career hat trick, but the first was blocked and the second went over the net. UTEP applied some pressure in the final 10 minutes, recording three shots, but the Owls kept them off the scoreboard.
What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"I thought we were really dangerous in the first 10-to-15 minutes, until we got the lead. We let our foot off the gas a little bit, which is kind of natural, but we're working on doing a better job of that. The second half, to get through the lightning delay and all of the distractions, it was a big deal to get the second goal. Overall, it was a good three points."
