Owls Close Out January at Tudor Fieldhouse
The Rice Owls women's basketball team will be looking to snap a five-game losing skid and earn their first C-USA victory this week as they welcome in Louisiana Tech (Thursday-7 p.m.) and Southern Miss (Saturday-2 p.m.) for a pair of C-USA West Division battles. Both all-time meetings are separated by a single game with Tech leading Rice (15-14) and the Owls holding the advantage over Southern Miss (9-8).
Scouting Louisiana Tech
After dropping their first four league games, the Lady Toppers have won two straight C-USA contests, including a 58-52 victory at UAB on Jan. 22. Tech ranks 22nd in the NCAA in made free throws (257), spearheaded by junior Keiunna Walker who ranks seventh individually in the country with 95 made free throws and 12th in attempts (118). Walker is fourth in C-USA in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game. Tech commits the fewest fouls per game in C-USA at just 14.5 per contest.
Scouting Southern Miss
The Lady Eagles saw their three-game C-USA winning streak snapped last time out in an 81-71 home loss to Middle Tennessee. Dominique Davis leads USM in scoring (15.1 ppg) and assists (4.4 apg) while Melyia Grayson is among the league leaders in both blocks (1.2 bpg) and rebounds (7.3 rpg). Southern Miss ranks second in C-USA in field goal percentage (43.8) and rebounding margin (+5.7).
Last Time Out
The Owls dropped a quadruple overtime heartbreaker last Saturday afternoon at Charlotte, falling 88-83 in the first 60-minute game in program history. An already short-handed Rice team was forced to play with eight active players and five of them registered 40+ minutes against the C-USA preseason favorite 49ers. Rice sophomore forward Ashlee Austin carried the scoring load for the Owls, matching her season and career-high with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 9-of-12 at the charity stripe.
The East is a Beast
Rice's five losses in C-USA have all come against the East Division with those five teams currently holding a 26-4 combined record through their first 30 games. The Owls next seven contests all come against schools from the West Division, who currently have a 14-22 combined record.
