Owls Sweep Doubleheader
1/22/2022 5:55:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Host UTRGV and Trinity next weekend
In Brief: Rice dropped only one match on the way to a sweep of a doubleheader with Lamar and Prairie View A&M at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Rice downed Lamar 6-1 in the opener and came back to blank Prairie View 7-0 in the nightcap.
Doubles: Facing a Lamar lineup that took the doubles point at Oklahoma State last weekend Rice spotted the Cardinals on match before holding serve at the third and first lines to win both matches 6-4 and nab the first point of the day. In the nightcap, the Owls raced to wins at the second and third lines to close out the first point in just over 20 minutes.
Singles: The Owls maintained their doubles momentum against Lamar by taking five of six first singles sets and holding those leads in straight-set wins with Campbell Salmon delivering the clinching point. They took all six first sets against Prairie View and rolled to a shutout. Freshman Eduardo Morais clinched the match with his first collegiate victory. Trinity Grear and Emir Sendogan each improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of singles wins while Haoyuan Huang picked up his first two collegiate singles wins to improve to 2-1.
Efe Ustundag: We knew doubles would be key against Lamar after seeing they took the point at Oklahoma State. It was good we got the breaks when we did at one and three and we were able to serve it out on both courts. Even though they took Denver's #32 doubles team to a tiebreaker last week, I thought Sumit and Hayoang played better today. It was good to see the improvements and adjustments they've made after just one week. Lamar started five freshmen and they are going to be a very tough team to play by the end of the year. They played a freshman at No.1 (Daniel Sancho Arbizu) who had a very successful fall and we knew he could be a very dangerous player. I thought Emir played relentless tennis against him. It was great to have Sumit back out there. He was excited to for a singles match. We started very strongly at the first three. Adam played a guy who was really on today. He never really gave Adam any chance to get back in the match. I think we took the wind out of Lamar with the strong first sets. We came back against Prairie View and got right after it. Took the doubles in less than 20 minutes and then singles in an hour. This was a day to show improvement and get some wins under your belt and we did that today.
Up Next: The Owls will be back in action at GRBTC next Saturday with another doubleheader, hosting UTRGV at 10 a.m. and Trinity at 3 p.m
