Four runners place in Top-10
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's cross country team began the 2021 fall season on the right foot by winning the 45th annual Rice Invitational Friday evening. Rice placed three of their five scoring runners in the top-10 and six in the top-20.
Sophomore Travis Dowd recorded his top individual performance as an Owl by placing sixth overall in the 6000m race in a time of 19:07.60, performing at a 3:11 pace.
Seniors Hociel Landa (8th-19:09.00) and Alex Topini (9th-19:19.50) also turned in top-10 performances in their final home meet in the Blue and Gray. Freshmen David Thames (12th-19:32.00) and Elliot Metcalf (17th-19:43.50) and senior Andrew Abikhaled (19th-19:45.90) also gave strong performances for the Owls.
"Tonight was a great team effort and a very nice way to start the season," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "I think each athlete had a good race and placing four in the top 10 was special. Travis (Dowd), Hociel (Landa), Alex (Topini) and Davis (Thames) were impressive out there."
The Owls will now have a couple weeks to prepare for the Texas A&M Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25 in College Station.
