Places sixth in the javelin to earn trip to Eugene
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice junior javelin thrower James McNaney punched his ticket to his first career NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a sixth place qualifying throw on Wednesday at the NCAA West Prelims, hosted by Texas A&M.
Just a couple weeks removed from earning Second Team All-Conference honors at the Conference USA Championships, McNaney clinched a trip to the grand stage by recording a distance of 66.90m (219-6.00) on his first attempt on Wednesday. The Longview, Texas native entered the meet seeded ninth overall and will now prepare for the national event, which will take place on Wednesday, June 9 at 8:15 p.m. (CT).
Athletes that place in the Top-12 in each event earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championships.
The Owls were also represented in the hammer throw on Wednesday as sophomore thrower Nick Hicks and freshman Shaun Kerry placed 30th (60.33m/197-11) and 38th (58.28m/191-2), respectively. Hicks has another opportunity to advance to Oregon on Friday (1:30 p.m.) when he competes in the discus.
In addition to Hicks, Rice will have four more competitors on Friday, which includes Ese Amata (High Jump-1 p.m.), Samuel Woodley (Discus-1:30 p.m.), Andrew Abikhaled (Steeplechase-6:10 p.m.) and Hociel Landa (Steeplechase-6:10 p.m.).
