
Russell and Sarkar Open NCAA Play on Monday

NCAA Men's Doubles Championship
Conrad Russell and Sumit Sarkar will open play at the NCAA Men's Doubles Championship on Monday when they face Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink of Georgia at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
First serves are scheduld for 3 p.m. (central) and fans can enjoy full coverage of the championship by downloading the TennisOne app.
Russell and Sarkar earned Conference USA's berth in the championship after moving into the national top 70, ending the season ranked 68th. They are the ninth doubles team from Rice to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship since the NCAA moved to its current format in 1977 and the first to represent Rice since Tommy Bennett and David Warren made back-to-back appearances in 2016 & 2017. Rice has sent a doubles team to the three of the last five NCAA championships.
Bryde and Zink are currently ranked seventh in the Oracle/ITA computer rankings and earned All-American honors in 2020 after completing the shortened season ranked 15th. Both qualified for the NCAA Singles tournament as well and dropped their opening matches on Sunday.
The Owls have not posted a win in NCAA Doubles play in their last three appearances. Their last win came in the opening round of the 2006 championship as Tony Haerle and Robert Searle stunned the Bulldogs' defending national champions, John Isner and Antonio Ruiz, 6-3 7-6 (3).
Rice has produced a pair of All-American doubles team in the current format. Current Rice head coach Efe Ustundag and Shane Stone reached the third round 1999 while Richard and William Barker earned honors in both 2003 and 2004.
