Owls place 5th at C-USA Outdoor Championships
MURFREESBORO, TN - Rice senior thrower James McNaney delivered a lifetime best throw on his final attempt in the javelin to grab second place and earn all-conference honors Sunday on day four of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
As a team the Owls placed fifth overall out of 10 teams, scoring 74 points. Charlotte (169 points), UTEP (126 points), and host Middle Tennessee (121 points) rounded out the top three.
McNaney, from Longview, Texas, unleashed a career-best throw of 71.41m (234-3.00) on his final attempt and at the time took the lead before North Texas' Zion Hill answered with a massive winning throw of 74.09m on his last attempt. McNaney's mark moved him into seventh place in the NCAA West region standings and No. 19 overall in the NCAA. The performance was just the latest in the vaulter-turned-javelin thrower's final season, improving upon his No. 2 all-time mark.
Other Owls who registered points on the final day of competition included Matthew Murray (4th-3:48.04) and Alex Topini (7th-3:51.39) in the 1500m and Jason Bugg (8th-1:55.56) in the 800m.
In total, the Owls earned five all-conference performances over the weekend. Next up for Rice will be the NCAA West Prelims, which will take place May 27-29 in College Station.
