The league foes were deadlocked 0-0 for the first five frames. LA Tech struck for three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits and three walks. Issuing free passes led to three more runs again in the top of the eighth as the Bulldogs needed only one base hit to double the margin to 6-0.
Tech starting pitcher Jonathan Fincher scattered four hits and one walk in a complete game effort. The Owls threatened for runs in the fifth, only to have runners stranded at second and third base. Rice also left men in scoring position in the sixth after leadoff double by Cade Edwards. The Owls ended the game with two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth.
Records
Rice is now 13-15-1 overall and 2-6-1 in conference games. LA Tech improved to 21-7 on the season and 7-2 in C-USA.
Of Note
• Cade Edwards, Braden Comeaux, Austin Bulman and Connor Walsh hit safely in the game for Rice. Edwards has reached base safely in nine straight games.
• The Owls had defeated the Bulldogs five straight times dating back to 2018.
• LA Tech entered the game ranked No. 16 in the nation.
• Rice issued a season high 11 walks, of which four turned into Tech runs.
• Two Owls are approaching the same career milestone in base hits. Bradley Gneiting has 196 hits and needs only four for 200, while Comeaux now has 192 and needs eight.
• After being sidelined last week at Middle Tennessee, Justin Dunlap returned to action as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Next Up
The C-USA weekend series continues thru Sunday. Saturday's double header of two seven-inning games begins at 1 pm. Sunday's nine inning finale is scheduled for 1 pm.
