Owls Win Four Events at J. Fred Duckett Twilight

Abikhaled, Topini sets PR’s on way to victories
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls men's track & field squad closed out their home season on Saturday by recording four victories at the 17th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
Sophomore thrower Nick Hicks began the day for the Owls by winning his fourth hammer throw competition of the season with a mark of 62.44m (204-10). In addition, Hicks also placed third in the discus with a distance of 54.27m (178-00).
Also in throws, Samuel Woodley picked up his sixth win of the year in the discus throw (57.05m-187-02), nearly topping his season-best. Woodley has now topped 57.00m in each of his last three meets.
On the track, Rice earned a pair of victories from their distance runners. Andrew Abikhaled topped the nine-minute mark with a PR of 8:57.18 to win the 3000m steeplechase, a time that ranks second in Conference USA this season. Finishing right behind Abikhaled was teammate Hociel Landa, who also established a PR with a time of 9:0037.
To close the night, distance runner Alex Topini set a PR in the 1500m by almost three second with a finish of 3:46.24. The victory was his second in the 1500m this season and his time ranks second in C-USA this season.
Other Owls who picked up top-three finishes included Shaun Kerry (HT-3rd-60.13m), Ese Amata (HJ-3rd-1.99m), Natan Rivera (PV-2nd-5.11m) and James McNaney (Javelin-2nd-65.94m)
