Landa, Woodley Earn Wins in San Antonio

Owls set six personal best marks
SAN ANTONIO - The Rice Owls men's track & field squad won two events and placed six athletes in the top three while establishing six personal best marks on the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Freshman thrower Samuel Woodley, who is ranked No. 1 in C-USA in the discus, picked up his fifth victory this outdoor season with a distance of 57.42m (188-05) on his third attempt. Woodley, who recorded the second and third-best throw in school history, has now placed in the top-three in six of his seven meets this season. In the same event, sophomore Nick Hicks established a personal best record with a third place throw of 54.33m (178-03) for his fifth top-three finish in the discus of his career.
Also excelling in field events was freshman Ese Amata, who set a season-best mark of 2.14m (7-00.25) in the high jump to finish third overall. The stellar freshman picked up his seventh top-three finish of his young career and now holds the fourth-best mark in C-USA this season and the 15th-best mark in the NCAA West region. Adding a top-three finish was sophomore vaulter Natan Rivera, clearing 5.20m (17-00.75).
The Owls were well represented in the 1500m with five runners competing and Hociel Landa fighting windy conditions to pick up a victory with a time of 3:59.49, his first win in the 1500m of his career. Junior Alex Topini placed second in the 800m (1:53.82), just slightly off his season-best time of 1:53.70. The top-three finish was Topini's fourth of the outdoor season.
The Owls will now prep for their final home meet of the outdoor season when they host the 17th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight on Saturday, April 24.
