Texas State Tops Rice 9-1 In Tourney Finale

Owls Next Begin Five-Game Homestand
HOUSTON — Texas State registered a six run third inning in a 9-1 win over the Rice Baseball team in Sunday's tournament finale at the annual Shriner's College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
The Story
Texas State struck for a run in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer. The Bobcats then exploded for six runs on six hits in the third for a 7-0 advantage.
State added a single run in the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-0. Rice plated its run in the top of the seventh. Will Karp hustled to reach first on a strikeout-wild pitch. He advanced to second on a base hit by Austin Bulman and Justin Dunlap walked to load the stations. Karp scored on Braden Comeaux's grounder on the left side. The Bobcats answered with a run in its half of the inning in a 9-1 final.

The Owls are now 4-6 on the season. Texas State is 5-8 on the year.
Rice At Minute Maid
The game was Rice's 51st played at Minute Maid Park since the start of the event in 2001. The Owls are now 30-21 in the downtown venue.
Notes & Stats
• Some of Rice's top hitters in the weekend tournament included Will Karp (.417, 5-for-12, 2B, three runs scored, three RBI), and Antonio Cruz (.400, 4-for-10, 2B, two runs, one RBI).
• Cade Edwards drew a pair of walks to extend his streak of reaching base to nine straight games.
• Reed Gallant started and worked 2.0 innings. The Owls used a five pitchers out of the bullpen.
• Already with a Minute Maid Park home run earlier in the tournament, true freshman Guy Garibay made his pitching debut in the bottom of the eighth. The rookie left-hander recorded a pair of strikeouts to highlight a solid 1-2-3 inning of work
