Owls Blank Roadrunners for fifth straight win

Houston: The 38^th ranked Rice women's tennis team saw the entire lineup contribute as they picked up their fifth consecutive win, racing past UTSA 7-0 on Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

Doubles: After Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova picked up a quick 6-1 win at the third line, the Owls faced a stiff test to secure first point. UTSA held a 4-3 lead at the first line and had a pair of break points before Maria Budin battled back to hold. The Owls then broke the Roadrunners and Diae El Jardi served it out all the duo to improve to 6-2 and give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The doubles match also saw the return of Linda Huang to the court. The senior, who had been named the C-USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Month for October during the abbreviated fall season, has been working her way back from an injury.

Singles: Bowtell, Michaela Haet and El Jardi raced to singles wins to clinch the win, while Federica Trevisan and Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova fought off challenges to round out the sweep.

Notable:

The Owls improved to 6-3 in doubles this season.
Trevisan improved to 7-1 in the dual season, including a 6-0 mark at the third line. Haet and El Jardi each won their third consecutive singles match.
Anastasia Smirnova, who is also recovering from an injury, registered her first singles point of the spring with a win at the fifth line.

Elizabeth Schmidt: "Everyone on our team got to compete today. You can always work on things in practice, but it can never replace the feeling of being out there competing with your teammates. Conditions were tough with the wind, but our team did a good job of stepping up and continue to show improvement on the things we've been working on. We always say our focus is only on the next match, but there are those outside things, such as the national rankings and beating ranked teams that can factor into a person's mindset. I thought our team had a workman-like mindset and played the point in front of them. When we were pushed, we were able to answer and get the job done."

Up Next: The Owls continue the homestand on Saturday March 13 at 11 a.m. when they host Memphis. Fans are now permitted to attend matches at GRBTC with the following protocols.
