Owls Win Four Events at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON, Texas — The Rice Owls men's track & field team earned four individual victories at the 38th annual Victor Lopez Classic.
Rice got the top two spots in the 3,000m steeplechase as Andrew Abikhaled set a PR of 9:06.79 on his way to his first career victory. Hociel Landa ran 9:13.57 to take second. Alex Topini earned his first victory of the season in the 1,500m, running a time of 3:49.30.
In the field events, Shaun Kerry began the day by winning the hammer throw with a mark of 57.88m (189-10.00), his second victory of the season. In the high jump, after Ese Amata and Lamar's JuVonta Conston tied with a jump of 1.97m (6-05.50), Amata took the jump off for his second victory of the season.
At the Texas Relays, Nick Hicks set a PR in the hammer throw with a distance of 64.22m, which is the second best all-time in Rice history. The throw was good for seventh-place.
