First win over a top 25 team since 2017
Houston: In less than an hour, freshman Federica Trevisan went from battling to keep 25th ranked Arizona State off the scoreboard to having the outcome on her racket and she delivered her fourth clinching point of the season to give Rice a 5-2 win on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The win was the Owls first over a top 25 team since 2017.
Doubles: After Michaela Haet and Trevisan opened the doubles with a 6-3 win at the second line, the Sun Devils tied it with a win on three. Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi broke in the fourth game of their match against ASU's 50th ranked duo of Illze Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptist and survived a deuce point in the eighth game to take a 6-3 win and give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Budin and El Jardi have picked up wins over ranked opponents in two of their last three matches.
Singles: While Diae El Jardi allowed the Owls to extend their lead early by racing to a 6-1, 6-1 win, the remaining points proved to be difficult to come by as the 25th ranked Sun Devils extended all to third sets or multiple tie breaks. Trevisan raced to a 6-0 win in her opening set, but after dropping the second 6-1, she found herself trailing 5-2 in the third with the Owls leading only 2-0. She held and then broke ASU's Lauryn John-Baptiste to close to 5-4, but needed to win a deuce point at 5-4 to hold serve and continue, eventually clinching the match with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker. Anna Bowtell took a 5-0 lead in the third only to see ASU's Giulia Morlet storm back to cut the margin to 5-4 and go back on serve. Bowtell put an to Morlet's comeback hopes with a service break of her own in the next game to extend the lead to 3-0, setting the stage for Trevisan to put the Owls over the top. Michaela Haet added the Owls final point with a three-set win over ASU's 115th ranked Sammi Hampton.
