Series Finale Set For 1 PM Sunday
LAFAYETTE, La. — The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns answered a three-run Rice rally with a three-run inning of their own for a 5-3 win over the visiting Owl Baseball team Saturday afternoon in Lafayette, La.
The Story
Louisiana pushed across runs in the second and third innings for an early 2-0 advantage, but Rice battled back with three runs in the top of the fourth to take its first lead in the weekend series 3-2. Freshman Guy Garibay drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Cade Edwards' double into the left field corner. Bradley Gneiting hustled for a RBI single after hitting to a tricky open space between the mound and first base. Freshman just Long followed with a RBI single through the right side to tie the score 2-2, but Rice wasn't quite finished. Will Karp put the Owls in front with a two-out base hit to left to make it 3-2.
On Karp's RBI single the Owls tried to score one more run on the play. Louisiana, however, was able to end the inning by throwing out Long as he dove head first for home plate. The defensive play was as good as it was close, and seemed to spark the Ragin' Cajuns offense in the bottom of the inning. Louisiana came right back with three runs on three hits to make it 5-3 after the fourth. The bullpens for both sides held firm and that's how the score finished. The Owls are now 2-3 on the season. Louisiana improved to 5-2 overall.
Rice Hitting
Edwards, Gneiting, Long and Karp accounted for the Owls' four hits in the game. Edwards' double was his first of the year and the other three base hits all drove in runs.
Rice Pitching
Blake Brogdon struck out two in 3.2 innings was the pitcher of record in his second start of the season. He was relieved by rookie Reed Gallant in the bottom of the fourth, who allowed a pair of hits while pitching the remainder of the game.
Notes & Stats
• Freshman Connor Walsh was subbed out of the game in the top of the second inning after grabbing his leg and fighting to reach first base on a fielder's choice. Fellow freshman Justin Long pinch ran, which then resulted in a series of defensive moves that send Karp from catcher to second, Edwards from second to left, Gneiting from left to right, and Garibay from right to center where Walsh started.
• Long made two strong throws from behind the plate to retire would-be base stealers in the second and fourth innings.
• The Owls drew walks to leadoff off four consecutive innings (second thru fifth), but converted only one of the free passes into a run.
• Rice went 3-for-7 (.429) when batting with runners in scoring position.
• In his two appearances this season totaling 9.1 innings, Reed Gallant has not allowed a run on just two hits while recording six strikeouts.
Next Up
The three-game weekend series concludes on Sunday. Start time is set for 1 pm. Rice's scheduled starting pitcher is veteran right-hander Roel Garcia.
