Comeaux & Edwards Both Collect Four Hits
The Story
Rice was again quick to jump on the scoreboard with runs in each of the first two innings to take 2-0 lead. The Owls' second score was a solo homer to left field by Cade Edwards for his first round-tripper of the young season. HBU would not go away so easily, however, and pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth to tie it at 2-2.
The Owls answered with another solo homer in the bottom of the frame. Justin Dunlap connected on a pitch for the first home run of his collegiate career. The Huskies scored in the top of the sixth to tie the game 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Bradley Gneiting's sacrifice fly scored Will Karp for a narrow 4-3 lead. The Blue & Gray exploded for five runs in the eighth to pull away for the 9-3 final. The big hit was a bases-clearing triple by Comeaux.
Hitting Stars
Rice outhit the Huskies, 12-8. Edwards' four hits were a new career high. The Houston native had three hits in a Rice game eight other times. Comeaux's four-hit day was his fourth as an Owl. He had a pair of four hit games in the short season of 2020.
Notes & Stats
• The Owls had a better day of batting (4-for-10) with runners in scoring position. Comeaux and Karp both had hits in the team's only two at bats with the bases loaded.
• Right-handed pitcher Garrett Zaskoda earned the first win of his collegiate career with 4.0 solid innings out of the bullpen. The Sealy, Texas, native allowed one run on two hits and a walk while registering a career high four strikeouts.
• Rice's scheduled starting pitcher for Monday is right-hander Roel Garcia. The start would mark Garcia's first pitching appearance at Reckling Park in three years.
