Owls Hit Road for First Time
The Owls make their first road appearance of the 2021-22 season this Saturday when they travel north to face the UT-Arlington Lady Mavericks. Rice went 3-2 on the five-game homestand to begin the season and now faces a UT-Arlington team that has started the year 4-2. The Lady Mavs lead the all-time series with the Owls, 4-2, and the two teams will be facing one another for the first time since 2009.
Scouting UT-Arlington
The Lady Mavs were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference a season after going 11-4 in conference play. Temple transfer Starr Jacobs is averaging 21.3 points per game on 60 percent shooting. In addition, UTA returns last year's leading scorer Shyia Smith as well as the last year's team leaders in assists in Katie Ferrell and Terryn Milton.
Last Time Out
The Owls entered the Thanksgiving break riding high following an 81-73 home victory over the Pacific Tigers on Nov. 24 to conclude their season-opening five-game homestand with a 3-2 record. Rice had five players score in double-figures for the first time since the Owls' 81-62 victory at Texas Tech last season on Dec. 5, 2020. The Owls trailed by as much as 62-57 with 7:56 remaining in the game but outscored the Tigers 24-11 the rest of the way.
Austin Powering Owls
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin is having a career season thus far, her third with the Owls. The Johns Creek, Ga. native has scored in double-figures in each of Rice's five contests and is averaging a team-best 16.8 points (6th in C-USA) on 52.9 percent shooting (4th in C-USA), along with 7.6 rebounds per game (8th in C-USA), all of which are career-highs.
We See Ya Malia
Rice freshman forward Malia Fisher is making her presence felt as a freshman and put together her best performance of the season in the win over Pacific with 14 points and 17 rebounds, both season-highs. Fisher ranks second in C-USA in rebounding (9.8 rpg) and blocks per game (2.00 bpg).
