Four players score in double-figures in first road tilt
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Rice Owls women's basketball team used a valiant late charge as they tried to erase a 22-point deficit but were unable to complete the comeback in a 73-65 loss Saturday afternoon at UT-Arlington.
Rice (3-3) was playing in their first road contest of the season against a UT-Arlington (6-2) team that was two days removed from upsetting No. 13 ranked South Florida. The Owls had four players score in double-figures, led by sophomore forward Ashlee Austin's 19-point performance on 7-of-14 shooting from the field (4-of-9 at the free throw line).
Redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz added 14 points off the bench, making a career-high four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Destiny Jackson stuffed the box score with 11 points, matched her career-high with eight assists, and snagged a season-high six rebounds. Freshman forward Malia Fisher recorded her third straight double-double and fourth of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in 29 minutes.
The Owls made a season-high eight three-pointers and won the rebounding battle with the Lady Mavs, 44-40.
UT-Arlington was led in scoring by Starr Jacobs, who poured in 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. The Lady Mavs outshot the Owls from the field, 43 percent-36 percent, and scored 40 of their 73 points in the paint while making 14-of-17 at the free throw line.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"I'll start by saying I'm disappointed in the outcome and that we dug ourselves such a hole in the third quarter before we turned it on, but I am proud of our fight. I'm proud that we didn't quit but I just want to see the fight show up sooner. We have things we can control that we need to clean up and we will."
