Owls Look to Bounce Back vs. Islanders
After making their first road appearance of the season last Saturday, the Rice Owls return home to host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders this Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls will be looking to avoid dropping consecutive games for the first time this season and hold a 3-2 record at home. Rice leads the all-time series against the Islanders, 5-2, including a 67-56 victory in Corpus Christi the last time the two teams met back on Dec. 18, 2017. The Islanders are 0-2 on the road this season.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
The Islanders (4-3) were picked to finish fifth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll with junior forward Alecia Westbrook earning Second-Team Preseason honors. Westbrook currently ranks 13th in the NCAA (1st in SLC) in rebounds per game (11.4) and leads the league in free throws made (32) and attempted (44). Senior guard Makinna Serrata leads the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) while freshman guard Annukka Willstedt ranks 28th in the country in field goal percentage (58.3).
Last Time Out
The Owls used a valiant late charge as they tried to erase a 22-point deficit but were unable to complete the comeback in a 73-65 loss last Saturday afternoon at UT-Arlington. Rice was playing in their first road contest of the season against a UT-Arlington (6-2) team that was two days removed from upsetting No. 13 ranked South Florida. The Owls had four players score in double-figures, led by sophomore forward Ashlee Austin's 19-point performance on 7-of-14 shooting from the field (4-of-9 at the free throw line).
Austin Powering Owls
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin is having a career season thus far, her third with the Owls. The Johns Creek, Ga. native has scored in double-figures in each of Rice's six contests and is averaging a team-best 17.2 points (3rd in C-USA) on 52.3 percent shooting (5th in C-USA), along with 7.5 rebounds per game (9th in C-USA), all of which are career-highs.
We See Ya Malia
Rice freshman forward Malia Fisher is making her presence felt as a freshman and is coming off of her third double-double (10 points/12 rebounds) of the season against UT-Arlington. Fisher ranks 25th in the NCAA in rebounding (10.2 rpg-2nd in C-USA) and is second among C-USA players in blocks per game (1.67 bpg) and double-doubles (3). Fisher is currently the No. 2 ranked freshman in the NCAA in rebounds per game, trailing only DePaul's Aneesah Morrow (11.3 rpg).
Bokunewicz Finding Her Groove
Redshirt freshman guard Maya Bokunewicz has given the Owls a boost off the bench in each of her last two games, scoring double-figures in both while making a combined 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. After a season-high 16 points vs. Pacific, Bokunewicz scored 14 more points at UT-Arlington draining a season-best four three-pointers.
