Owls Head to Sam Houston
The Rice Owls look for consecutive wins for the first time this season when they travel to Huntsville on Thursday to face the Sam Houston Bearkats on ESPN+. The Owls will be making just their second road appearance of the season after returning home to defeat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders last Saturday. Rice has owned the all-time series against the Bearkats, 19-7, including a 79-50 victory back in Nov. 2017.
Scouting Sam Houston
The Bearkats (4-5) fell to 0-5 on the road this season on Monday following their 84-50 loss to Alabama. Sam Houston was picked to finish sixth in the WAC coaches' poll in the preseason with Faith Cook earning Preseason Second team honors. The redshirt senior guard leads the team in scoring (15.3 ppg), followed by senior forward Courtney Cleveland (14.9 ppg). The Bearkats are averaging 66.4 points as a team while surrendering 72.7 points, which ranks 312th in the NCAA.
Last Time Out
The Owls used a balanced scoring attack to rally from a 10-point third quarter deficit to defeat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 69-61 last Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice received a game-high 20 points off the bench from junior guard Haylee Swayze, who was making her season debut after returning from injury. The Purcell, Okla. native was one of four Owls who scored in double-figures, finishing just three points shy of her career-high.
Fisher Named C-USA Freshman of the Week
Forward Malia Fisher was voted the C-USA Freshman of the Week after helping guide the Owls to their win last Saturday, the league office announced on Monday. Fisher recorded her third consecutive game in double-figure scoring with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, 3-of-4 at the free throw line, to go along with seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. Fisher ranks second among all C-USA players in rebounds per game (9.7) and is the second-leading rebounder in NCAA Division I among all freshmen. Fisher also ranks second in C-USA in blocked shots per game (1.57).
Jackson Dishing the Rock
Sophomore point guard Destiny Jackson now leads all of C-USA in assists per game (5.3), a mark that ranks 32nd in the NCAA. Jackson has dished out six or more assists in four of her six games and has also scored in double-figures in consecutive games for the first time in her career.
Bokunewicz Finding Her Groove
Redshirt freshman guard Maya Bokunewicz has made 9-of-18 three-point attempts over her last three games and now ranks second among all C-USA players in three-point percentage (41.2) and is sixth in three-pointers made per game (2.00).
Austin Powering Owls
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin is having a career season thus far, her third with the Owls. The Johns Creek, Ga. native has scored in double-figures in each of Rice's seven contests and is averaging a team-best 16.4 points (5th in C-USA) on 51.4 percent shooting (4th in C-USA), along with 7.4 rebounds per game (10th in C-USA), all of which are career-highs.
