Owls Sweep South Central Athlete/Coach of the Year honors
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Tuesday that Rice sophomore Grace Forbes was awarded her second straight South Central Region Athlete of the Year honor while Rice veteran head coach Jim Bevan earned his second South Central Coach of the Year award.
Forbes, who hails from Wallingford, Pa., entered the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on quite the hot streak, winning individual titles at three consecutive meets, including the South Central Regional Championship. Forbes was also the Conference USA individual champion for the second time in her career and won at the Arturo Barrios Invite, Texas A&M Invite, and Rice Invitational. She was a member of a Rice team that earned the program's seventh appearance as a team at the NCAA Championships and placed 45th overall individually.
Bevan, in his 17th year as head coach at Rice, led the Owls to a second-place finish at the South Central Regional Championships and a third-place result at the C-USA Championships. Rice placed 31st at the 2021 NCAA Championships in the team's first appearance on the big stage in 11 seasons. Bevan was also the South Central Region Coach of the Year in 2007.
Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
