Fisher registers first career double-double
HOUSTON – Behind freshman forward Malia Fisher's first double-double of her career, the Rice Owls women's basketball team took down crosstown foe Texas Southern 59-47 Wednesday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (2-1) responded to their 73-69 loss to Louisiana last Saturday by holding the Tigers (0-3) to just 36 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers.
Fisher totaled 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocks in 33 minutes, recording not only her first double-double of the season but the Owls as well. She was joined in double-figure scoring by sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait, who led all players with 17 points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin (12 points) also scored in double-digits for a third consecutive game, making 4-of-5 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Destiny Jackson chipped in eight points and tied her season-high with six assists.
The Owls, who led wire to wire, shot just 38 percent from the field for the game but outscored the Tigers 18-0 from three-point territory, holding TSU to 0-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"It was good to get back out there. Last Saturday left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't slept very much since then. This was a sloppy one tonight. We were able though to respond there in the third quarter. We're a young and inexperienced team and we've got to figure out a way to put together 40 minutes. I did think we learned and grew some from the previous game. I think it's important for our team to experience success and understand that if they execute the game plan we can win basketball games."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls won the opening quarter 15-9 with Fisher (6 points) and Crosthwait (5 points) contributing much of the scoring punch. Rice scored 10 of their 15 points in the paint and held a 7-0 edge in fastbreak points. Fisher made 3-of-4 shots from the field while adding four rebounds, a steal and a block.
Second Quarter
Rice shot just 23 percent for the period but still managed to outscore the Tigers, 12-11, to take a 27-20 lead going into halftime. Austin totaled five points in the quarter and Rice took advantage of the charity stripe, making 5-of-7 at the line.
Third Quarter

Rice closed the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 47-34 advantage to the fourth period. Crosthwait came alive in the quarter with seven points while Fisher chipped in five points and five rebounds.
