Owls Tussle with Oklahoma State on Saturday
The Owls play the fourth contest of a five-game homestand this Saturday when they welcome in Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State. Rice has won two of their first three games at home while the Cowgirls are coming off a narrow 44-40 victory over Missouri State on Wednesday. Oklahoma State was picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 Preseason Poll and holds an 8-0 advantage all-time against the Owls.
Last Time Out
Behind freshman forward Malia Fisher's first double-double of her career, the Rice Owls women's basketball team took down crosstown foe Texas Southern 59-47 Wednesday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice held the Tigers (0-3) to just 36 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers. Fisher totaled 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with 13 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks in 33 minutes, recording not only her first double-double of the season but the Owls' as well. She was joined in double-figure scoring by sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait, who led all players with 17 points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers.
Crosthwait a Steady Hand
Rice's lone returning starter Katelyn Crosthwait has provided the needed scoring punch for the Owls through the first three games of the season, registering double-figures in each contest including a team-high 17 points last time out vs. Texas Southern. Crosthwait has made a team-best eight three-pointers.
About Edmonds
The Owls' newest head coach comes from North Carolina State University, where she had eight successful seasons with the Wolfpack. Edmonds served as an assistant coach from 2013-18, adding Recruiting Coordinator duties in 2018, before being elevated to associate head coach prior to the start of the 2019-20 campaign. During her tenure in Raleigh, N.C., Edmonds and head coach Wes Moore led the Wolfpack to an overall record of 190-65, including an 89-39 mark in the ACC, along with five NCAA Tournament appearances and three NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 berths (2018, 2019 and 2021).
Defending Home Court
The Owls have won 21 of their last 23 games at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice is 62-9 at home since the 2016-17 season.
