Austin scores 17 points in defeat
HOUSTON – A short-handed Rice Owls women's basketball team put up a valiant effort against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse but ultimately dropped a 68-48 decision in the team's fourth game of their current five-game homestand.
Rice (2-2) was forced to play just seven players due to injuries against a Cowgirls (3-1) team that had 15 players enter the contest.
The Owls were led by sophomore Ashlee Austin, who came up just short of her first career double-double with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes. Sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait (15 points) also scored in double-figures for a fourth straight game for the Owls, making a season-high four three-pointers. Freshman Trinity Gooden made her first collegiate start at point guard and scored five points with eight rebounds and two assists in 40 minutes of action.
Oklahoma State had two players score in double-digits, led by 13 points from Lauren Fields. The Cowgirls outshot the Owls from the field, 45 percent-30 percent, and held a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint. The Cowgirls had 39 of their 68 points come from players off the bench.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"I'm not into moral victories but I thought we did some pretty good things. They were a better basketball team tonight and they had more depth than us. We did a really good job taking away their starters but they had more players to keep throwing at us. The thing that I'm most proud of is our fight, our energy, and our intensity. They gave us everything they had. I'm encouraged to build off of that."
