Rice Meets Houston in Exhibition
10/16/2021 12:26:00 AM | Baseball
In Brief: The Rice Baseball team battled with Houston in a 12-inning exhibition Friday evening at UH's Schroeder Park.
The Details: Friday's game was the second of two exhibitions the Owls played during the fall under new head coach Jose Cruz Jr. The Owls smashed out 10 hits, led by Guy Garibay Jr.'s three-hit night, which included a pair of home runs and three runs batted in. Justin Dunlap, Drew Woodcox and Justin Long also collected a pair of hits, while Woodcox added a home run.
On the mound, 12 Owl pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Roel Garcia opened the game by stranding the bases loaded in the first before a 1-2-3 second, striking out three in the process. Caleb Matthews went two innings, striking out two while facing the minimum. Drake Greenwood and Matthew Linskey each struck out the side in an inning of work.
Jose Cruz Jr: "Today was very much a positive for us. (Guy) Garibay swung the bat great. I thought (Drew) Woodcox looked very good, very strong up there as well. It was a nice showing. Some guys showed some stuff today. The pitching was good for the most part. The guys pitched great. (Caleb) Matthews was really, really good, as was (Matthew) Linskey. It was great to see Cooper (Chandler) out there competing. These guys, they're doing a good job. Now, it's time to get into the nitty gritty, get into the details of everything and just finish up fall ball strong.
