Quick start in doubles sets the tone
Houston: Rice stormed to an early lead thanks to a stout set of doubles matches and maintained momentum in singles to take a 5-2 win over Sam Houston State at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: The Owls made quick work of the doubles point by not dropping a game at the second and third lines to improve to 10-5 in doubles matches during the dual season.
Singles: Rice took four of six first sets in singles and freshman Maria Budin staked the Owls to a quick 2-0 lead by dropping only one game at the sixth line to improve to 4-1 in dual singles this year. Anna Bowtell followed shortly after with the third point of the day while running her dual season mark to 4-1. Senior Priya Niezgoda delivered the clinch point with her win at the third line and Michaela Haet closed out the scoring by scoring the final four points in her second-set tiebreaker to win in straight sets.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I thought our team came out there really solid in doubles. We came out with good focus and attitude and really took it to them. We got off to quick starts on four courts in singles and it was nice to see Maria (Budin) sustain her momentum from doubles to get off the court quickly with the second point. We know that Sam Houston will always keep fighting and they made it tight on a couple courts. I was pleased that we were able to get the job done. The conditions got much tougher in the middle of the match, so on some courts we were battling conditions, battling ourselves and battling Sam Houston. It was a good team win today and we'll get after it this week in practice and get ready for a pair of good matches in Arizona."
Up Next: The Owls return to the road next weekend with a pair of matches in Tempe, Arizona. They will take on Wichita State at noon on Saturday and 14th ranked Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
