Close out Arizona swing vs. ASU at 1 p.m. Sunday
Tempe, AZ: Rice opened a two-match slate in Tempe, Arizona by blanking Wichita State 4-0 at the Whiteman Tennis Center on the campus of Arizona State on Saturday.
Doubles: Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova snapped a 5-5 tie to win the last two games and clinch the doubles point for the Owls. 40th ranked Anastasia Smirnova and Priya Niezgoda gave the Owl the early advantage with a 6-3 win over the Shockers 54th ranked duo of Marta Bellucco and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva, to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 vs. ranked opposition this spring.
Singles: Niezgoda doubled the Rice lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the fourth line and as a team, the Owls carried over their momentum from doubles by taking four of six first singles sets. Linda Huang grabbed the Owls' third point of the day and Anastasia Smirnova fought off a late challenge to win the final two games of her second set and deliver the clinch point at the third line.
Up Next: The Owls close out the road trip by facing 18th ranked Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
